Taking the law into our hands

Cruel death called Mob justice

CRUEL DEATH: Incidents such as this continue to shock the country, with the latest incident reported in Mpumalanga this week. Photo: HALDEN KROG
Mob justice is when the community take the law and matters into their own hands ,this usually happens when members of the community are really angry and claiming that the police are not doing their work properly. The community will then catch the offenders and beat him to death or to be a very critical stage. This is done through the use of throwing stones at the offenders, beating them with whips, belts, hands, kicking them hard and necklacing them.

The most recent example of this kind of violence took place at Nkanini, Khayelitsha, where a 1 000-strong mob killed three men by necklacing them last week after a kangaroo court had found them guilty of stealing a generator. Two of the men died at the scene. The third died in hospital.
As communities take the law into their own hands, in a bid to tackle crimes ranging from petty theft to rape and murder, they do so out of a sense of desperation to live in peace. Recently Khayelitsha township in Western Cape and New Brighton in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, experienced a spate of these attacks. link

It cannot be denyed that a lot needs to be done to improve our justice system but at the same time one wrong cannot correct another. The reality is that almost daily in our townships, residents predominantly young men are being injured or killed by mobs meting out “people’s justice”. .Mob justice is wrong and it only makes matters worse instead of solving them.It is a violent way of solving issues. We as South Africans what are we really teaching our children. Are we teaching them that violence is the right way of solving issues?

  3. At some point the government can push us to take such actions because of poor service delivery. However, as parents we should always follow the law so that coming generations can learn from us to handle situations of life.

    1. I agree, violence is not the right way to solve any situation. Mob justice is violent and these community members do it infront of children. This has to stop

  4. nothing and no one is above the law, I feel strongly about mob justice because ive seen it happen right in front of me. the problem I think lay mostly with our justice system because a person can be convicted of a crime today and seeen walk the streets free the next day, this angers a lot of people hence we experience so many cases of mob justice in townships.people feel that if the law doesnt work for them they will take it into their own hands and make it work for them.sometimes I wonder if its a bad thing because it panishes those that punish others

    1. Mob justice is wrong on many levels. I think since the police are not doing their work properly , communities can come up with other alternatives to deal with the criminals and stop killing them.

  7. it reaaly is a wrong way of solving things but I think if the Police were doing their jobs properly then things would not reach such stages. The thing of the Police being ignorant and delaying peoples complains also leads to these circumstances, but we as South Africans must try to change because really what kind of example are we setting for the future generation.

    1. I also put the blame on the South African police, if they did their work properly mob justice would not even exsist. But again communities cannot sit back and relax while criminals walk freely on our streets.

  9. I say criminals should be burnt to death! Atleast crime will decrease

  10. Criminals should not be burnt, how are they gona feel the pain of being punished if they are dead?

    1. But then again if the community burns a person they will be cought for murder and to think that they did the police a favour by doing their job.

    2. Thats how it is in South Africa. They police should just do their job and all will be well.
